Thoughts
Despite doing all the “right” things - my position has been cut in half for next year. The financial climate could not accept an elementary librarian at the top step. It will be very difficult to give the teachers and students the library they deserve.

Beyond Paper & Pencil: Bringing Literacy to Life...
This conference day was slightly outside my comfort zone - but it was an excellent experience. We first brainstormed the characteristics of a good literacy lesson. Julie Kabat and Susan Griss led us in literacy activities which included singing, poetry, expressive language, vocabulary development, choral reading and tableau. We participated in many different group activities to learn strategies...

Ken Fujiuchi presented great program (also discovered my posts disappear if I pause too much before posting) I will look more at scriblio , wordpress .. Best part of attending nyla is interaction with all types of librarians & differing perspectives!
Saturday morning
It’s interesting as I try to catch up on reading and what others have said about the NYLA conference that there are very few blogs about it. One is from a library student who apparently drove 3 hours from NYC for just the day and had very odd experiences (including meeting the same bad/odd poetry guy in with vendors that I met - glad someone else agreed about the poetry) - wish she had had...

Paul Friedman discussed successful muswiki I am impressed with size & scope of NYlibrary. Information sharing committee to set up structure & get all to participate & get all onboard used...

Multiple Intelligences Revisited
After vendors & lunch workshop at Marriott. Excellent Public librarian presenters - 8 intelligences summarized as nature, people, number, picture, self, body, music & word smart. Using info from Gardner As librarians we are interested in inforrmation & it’s relationship to these 9 (some are adding existential) intelligences. Presented ways to include these in library programs. ...
Literacy standards - digital learners
Description of committee process in formulating..common elements..using existing elements & standards..considered audience..standards. During the presentation participants talked & discussed sections of the document - (short on handouts) posted on NYLA website however. Broken down then into skills —dispositions / assessments. I would have prefered less “publicity” in...

Liz Deskins, an elementary librarian from Ohio, presented this well attended, fantastic workshop. Librarians have a vital role in both reading advocacy and reading instruction. We received a large notebook full of ideas, research and links to added information about the librarian’s proven importance in reading success. It was a full productive day, which included an excellent power point by Liz...

Web 2.0 awards - but they don’t seem to be all web 2.0 sites to me - and they are very mixed - Books includes sites that publish books as well as sites that house a collection.

An alternative to GoWed2.0 - “The SimpleSpark site tracks almost 10,000 Web 2.0 tools and services. It uses the application icon like “Go2Web20” but underneath each icon is a brief description about the app or service. I really like that. In addition, there is also a rudimentary rating scale based on user feedback. Hardly scientific but better then nothing. Apps are also...
