Thoughts
Despite doing all the “right” things - my position has been cut in half for next year. The financial climate could not accept an elementary librarian at the top step. It will be very difficult to give the teachers and students the library they deserve. 2 months ago

Beyond Paper & Pencil: Bringing Literacy to Life through the Performing Arts Friday, November 14th at Capital Region BOCES
This conference day was slightly outside my comfort zone - but it was an excellent experience. We first brainstormed the characteristics of a good literacy lesson. Julie Kabat and Susan Griss led us in literacy activities which included singing, poetry, expressive language, vocabulary development, choral reading and tableau. We participated in many different group activities to learn strategies for including dance, music and theater in literature. They used a variety of approaches during the day and demonstrated how to include everyone’s learning strengths. They kept the focus on improving literacy. The handout is also well done. I would highly recommend them as presenters in our district!

Saturday morning
It’s interesting as I try to catch up on reading and what others have said about the NYLA conference that there are very few blogs about it. One is from a library student who apparently drove 3 hours from NYC for just the day and had very odd experiences (including meeting the same bad/odd poetry guy in with vendors that I met - glad someone else agreed about the poetry) - wish she had had more help in getting something out of a conference! The other is a very complete description of the first session I attended on Thursday (and I linked to it from my short comments). The vendors are not at the conference on Saturday - something I have always found odd, since some librarians can only attend on the weekend. 8 months ago
